NOTE: In Diamond Crest, we suggest everyone take the course Beginning Camping (vs. Basic Overnight) and you are covered for most outdoor activities (with the exception of Back Packing and any extended trips).
Basic Overnight
Basic Overnight has two components. Basic Overnight A is required for at least one adult accompanying a troop/group on an overnight sleepover. This would include indoor cooking and indoor sleeping such as a home backyard sleepover or "slumber party," council campsite, cabin or motel. Add Basic Overnight B if your overnight also includes any outdoor cooking such as BBQ cooking, stick cooking, propane stove, etc. or includes a campfire. Emphasis includes safety, girl readiness and involving girls in planning, program activities and ideas, and outdoor manners. Segment B emphasis includes outdoor cooking safety and skills.
Prerequisite: Getting Started: Orientation to Girl Scout Leadership
Beginning Camping
This course is required for at least one adult accompanying a troop/group on a camping trip and involved in the planning process. This may include activities such as outdoor cooking, tent sleeping, campfires hiking, etc. Emphasis includes safety and first aid requirements, budgeting, group dynamics in the out-of-doors, progression, program and environmental activities and ideas, outdoor skills and minimal impact camping
Backpacking Training
Backpacking Training is required for at least one adult accompanying a troop/group on a backpacking trip. Participants who are new to backpacking need to attend ALL of the sessions. Participants who are practiced backpackers, but who have not taken Girl Scouts out will only need to come to part of session.
